Made the mistake of painting the pieces with dayglo paint, and then using Aircraft paint stripper after the wifey said the dayglo looked terrible. Unfortunately, the pieces degraded entirely, but at least I pulled the chips prior to destroying the set. Ordered some triple-weighted 3" tall K Staunton wood pieces, and with a little bit of ingenuity, et voila! Note…the weights interfered with the chips, so I had to steam the pieces to remove the weights. I’m sure there’s some barrier one can find to combat this, but it’s good enough for government work. Downside is the pieces no longer have the touch-feature, but lights work when the piece is rocked or lifted.
