ChessUp 2 features hardwired bots you can play out of the box without connecting to WiFi or to the app and it offers 11 different levels ranging from level 1 “500” to level 11 “1400”. One big flaw I noticed though is that it is extremely weak in the endgame. You can quickly verify this via ChessUp 2’s board editor feature.
So to test this out you can empty the board and just place white queen on d1, white king on e1, black king on e8, go to Board Editor, hit the load button, white to move, hit next button, choose to play as black, set AI strength to level 11 “1400”, hit the play button.
Level 11 “1400” cannot figure out how to mate with queen vs lone king. It will allow three-fold repetition.
This is like one of the easiest endgames to learn and one of the first things I learned about chess. It’d be pretty much impossible to reach 1400 without learning this basic endgame. Level 11 “1400” should definitely know how to win this endgame in my opinion.
I asked chatgpt at what rating would it be expected for a human to win with a queen vs a lone king and it said that if you’re rated 1000 or higher you’d be expected to win queen vs king, and I agree. I know that the WiFi enabled-engines (level 12 and up) know how to win that endgame but I feel that the hardwired ChessUp bots level 7 “1000” to 12 “1400” should be able to win this elementary queen vs king endgame.
