Advice vs Chessnut Evo

Hello,

I’m looking to buy a standalone sensor chessboard on which I can also connect to LiChess and Chess.com to play against their Bots and humans. I have been reading reviews of the Chessnut Evo but have just come across the Chessup 2. Aesthetically it looks better - not too shiny, smaller screen and bigger pieces.

A minor attraction is doubling-up as a draughts game.

Apart from price, would anyone be able to give me the main reasons why I would buy the Chessup over the Chessnut?

Thanks in advance,

Matt.

My biggest plus is that with chessup you don’t need a phone or computer, just u can play without distractions.

I’m sure you mean play on Lichess without a computer? Because you can play on Lichess right now with the ChessUp 2 board using the Chessconnect extension.
I’ve played a few games already on both chess.com and Lichess using that extension and the ChessUp2 board and the websites save your games for analysis too

Well I dont own a phone (I use my dad’s to set up) and love that I can use the chess up 2 without a computer on it or required with it.

Really? I thought it was not possible to survive without a phone :joy:

Mostly what pawnpusher said. Evo is nice that you can open any video or web page and it can detect the board so you can follow along with a lesson on yt, for example. Also nice that you can train your own bot from games you uploaded (you get 10 credits free, then it’s a premium service after for training your own bots).

Chessup pieces are nicer and feel sturdier, imo. Evo pieces feel a bit wobbly like they’re top heavy or don’t rest completely flat.

The best thing about chessup2 over evo to me is the touch sensing. For more beginner level folks, the fact that a move doesn’t register on the chessup2 until you let go of the piece is great and very friendly. Also nice to be able to just touch a piece and see legal moves (or assistance if enabled). Evo doesn’t have that. it detects when a piece is lifted. If you hover over a square, even without touching it, it can register it as a move. On the evo you can set a delay to compensate for that (up to 2 seconds, I think).

Evo doesn’t have any option to show legal moves except against a bot as far as I’ve found.

Both can be played offline and without a phone.

I kinda wish they’d get together and have a baby, a Chessup pro or something.

There are a couple of things I really like about both. Functionally, I prefer the chessup and I think the pieces are more sturdy, weighty, etc. To just turn one on and play a game, I’d prefer the chessup2 probably. Feature-wise, it comes down to preference. Copmany-wise, I don’t have much interaction experience with chessnut folks, but I’d prefer Bryghtlabs(Chessup) on that front as well.

If you did get an evo, def get a youtuber’s code or something. The price is never the real price and the perpetual fake sales on the website. You should be able to get it for around 520USD with a referral code, which I consider the real price.

Thank you @Pawnpusher and @Ramjet69 for the comparison. I acquired ChessUp 2 and am considering purchasing Chessnut Evo to compensate for ChessUp 2’s functional limitations.

Although the ChessUp 2 feels somewhat like a children’s toy due to its plastic construction, small display, and bright colors, the black and white board with black pieces makes it difficult to see. However, two factors will cause me to postpone purchasing the Evo:

  1. Better chess pieces
  2. Piece touch function

I hope ChessUp will provide all the missing features before Evo receives improved chess pieces.

The missing functions:

  1. Game review and analysis
  2. Training
  3. Puzzles
  4. You can use your phone or tablet camera to take a picture of a chessboard, or upload a screenshot, and ChessUp will show it on the board.
  5. Multiple users accounts
  6. Engines

I don’t mind having a mobile device or tablet alongside the ChessUp 2; in fact, I find it more practical to have the board and screen separate.
