Chess 960 (Magnus Carlson's Freestyle Chess)

For anyone who does not know, Freestyle chess is the game mode where all the pieces on the back rank are randomized at the start of the game. There are a few rules (i.e. King must be between both rooks, etc.)

Is there any goal of implementing this mode in the future to ChessUp?

Forgive me, I may be incorrect but am just curious; don’t you mean Chess960 and isn’t it from Fischer?
Freestyle chess being pushed more from Magnus, but using Fischer’s rules? (I’m still pretty new to chess)

Yes! Good catch. I am discussing ‘Freestyle’ Chess. I am going to edit the post just to add to the confusion

It would be great if ChessUp supported this game mode!

I am really motivated right now to play Chess960! Chess.com also supports that option, is there a way to integrate it? One problem will definitely be that you need to set up the pieces after the match has started, as the position is random for every match. You would need some preview similar to the board editor, and you will end up loosing some time for sure.

Well one implementation could have a 30 second preview for the players to “read the board/place pieces”. This way even if their not playing with a chessup board it still makes sense to have the additional time at the startup

It’s the same game, whatever one calls is. Freestyle is just a name invented for…well, we will call them ‘political reasons’ by a for profit company to try to turn a profit with investors.

That’s exactly how it is - It’s Chess960.

Yes but this would imply a modification chesscom side which is out of control from bryghtlab guys (even if they’re partner somehow it will be difficult to justify having this preview feature only for chessup)

I think it’s worth discussing this with Chess.com, since Bryghtlab’s boards are not the only ones on the market. This suggests that there’s some interest, which could grow if the chess variant gains more attention in the future.

I wasnt suggesting only ChessUp boards to have preview. Rather, all players no matter their imput

Yes I understand but imagine you’re both online player, wouldn’t it bother you that you both have to wait for the preview ?

I don’t see any sense in a preview time. If you need more time, just play longer time controls.

The point is two fold:

  1. Allowing a brief moment for players to get a sense of the board and where all the pieces are. This enables simple strategies to develop.
  2. Allows OTB board controllers to set pieces correctly

I totally agree and think it is a wonderful idea.

There would be no other way to install Chess960 without some sort of preview.

@Jeff :face_with_monocle: what do you think?

Chess960 is on the to-do list. *for OTB play.

For online play - we will need to think through how to handle. Might be that the setup time is unavoidable.

Thank you for such a quick response.
Funnily enough I found an article on ChessUp’s website that discuss the tournament rules for the 2021 Champions Showdown: Chess9LX. In this official tournament they allowed each player 10 minutes to review the board before play began. Obviously too long for online Rapid play. However, I do think that 1:30 to 2mins would be plenty for Rapid games on Chess.com.

Oh wow - yeah we used to have a blog and would cover chess events and news. I honestly forgot about the Chess960 article.

Chess960 has been on the to-do list for a while. This year we will finally have time to get to it (second half of the year).

That makes sense. The game mode is so peripheral in necessity/consumer desire for sure. Glad to its in the field of vision though!
