Main Display Orientation

@Jeff
Dear Jeff,
Thanks for the 3.2.0 firmware update, your OTB time formats with the evaluation bar is great, including all the list of bug fixes :+1:
Instead of writing a long piece of text, I’m attaching three board photos with suggestions.
Let me know what you think and if flipping the main menu back to it’s original position whithout having to power off the board is feasable, and part of your wishlist.
With Kind Regards,
Sam

So the only issue with this - is often people want it to stay flipped after playing black. i.e. launch another chess.com game as random or another bot game as black, etc.

No matter what orientation we choose post-black play, it will be wrong 50% of the time.

So this is actually an intentional choice by us.

And don’t worry about the rocker switch - those are like 1 or 10 million cycle switches.

Would it be possible to include a button on the display to manually switch the orientation?

Or have that an option after a game have ended; you are asked how you want the orientation of the screen before getting back to ’main menu’? Could just be two arrows and you have to click one of them. This could also be a setting in case people are happy with how it is today (I am).

Just an idea

Kind regards,
Gustav

That is perhaps possible and a good solution. I will send it to the team.

Hello Jeff, thanks to Gustav for the button suggestion ! It would be a great feature to have, especially when going through chess lessons, and having to switch sides often.
Thanks again for all the great work , it’s much appreciated.
Please note that if it’s too complicated to do, it’s OK to leave it as it is.
With kind Regards,
Sam

@Jeff
Hello Jeff,
Hope you are doing fine, and many thanks for all the great work, you and your colleagues are putting into the ChessUp 2 features, at this point, I’m sure it’s the greatest chessboard on the market !
Is the main menu rotation still in your plannings ? It would be a great feature to have, especially when studying moves, and having to turn the board around quite often.
If possible to achieve, it could be by adding some type of ‘’circle arrow’’ just near the WiFi and battery indicators.
Let me know what you think  and if it’s in your planning.
Many thanks :folded_hands:

Manual display flip is not currently on the feature roadmap. So no date currently and I am not sure if we will add it or not.

@JustinF - something to double check we have in the feature consideration list ^

Hello Jeff,

Thanks for your feedback.

It would have been a very useful feature, i mostly play against Bots, and studying positions from chess books and from the internet, and 90 % of the time, even if it’s the black pieces that start first, i always have the white pieces in front of me.
When the black pieces have the first move, the display is turned around, and i need to restart the bord, to get the menu facing to the white pieces.

I’m quite sure many users, would like to be able to control the display orientation.

I understand that you and your team are working very hard, and have many other features to take care of, and you’re all doing your best to have the #1 intelligent chess board on the market.

If sometime in the future, you have some time to look into it, it would be extremely appreciated.

Take care and keep on your great work !

With kind regards,

Sam

Just throwing my two cents in here: I’d also like this feature!

As it stands, if I play black I just play from the white side, figure it’s an interesting way to see the board from the other perspective, as I’m still pretty new to more serious chess, and my board’s currently in kind of a tight spot so flipping it around is a bit of a pain. Being able to manually flip the screen during these matches (or after the match, as it’s not a huge deal to have it flipped during the match) would be nice!

I suppose it’s not within the scope of this thread, and would likely require a firmware update so I don’t expect it’s viable, but having an option to “pretend” the pieces are on opposite sides would be real nice. i.e. I’m playing as black but I’m sitting on the white side of the board, if the board could just pretend a1 is g8, etc, would be very nice. Could be an advanced option so as to not confuse people since the coordinates on the board itself would no longer be accurate.

Like I said, I understand that’s probably not viable, but maybe food for thought on the ChessUp 3 or other future products!

Welcome to the community, Xbob42 — and thanks for adding your voice to this discussion! :raising_hands:
Really appreciate you sharing your experience and giving a concrete use-case.

Reading through the whole thread again, it’s interesting to see how many different player types have asked for some form of manual display control:
• lesson / study players switching sides often
• OTB players sitting on opposite sides of a table
• players with limited table space
• players who prefer seeing the game from Black’s POV for learning

Even though there are different suggestions (automatic flip, toggle button, advanced mode, etc.), the underlying request seems consistent:

:right_arrow: Some way for the user to manually choose the screen orientation when needed.

Not as a default every time, but simply as a quality-of-life option for those situations.

I totally understand if this isn’t top of the roadmap right now — there are bigger features in development — but it’s great to see continued interest from new and existing users in this idea. Thanks again to everyone here for contributing use-cases and explanations. :folded_hands:

And Xbob42 — do you mostly play bots / online games, or over-the-board with another person?

I almost exclusively play online matches, though I do occasionally play bots. Have not yet played another person over the board!

That makes sense — online matches are where I use my board the most too :+1:
And yeah, the built-in bots are surprisingly fun (especially when you want a quick match without opening another device).

If you ever get the chance to play over-the-board with someone on the ChessUp screen, it’s a really cool experience. Seeing both players focus on the board instead of phones or tablets feels very “pure” chess.

Do you mainly play rapid / blitz online, or longer classical time controls?

I too would like an option to manually flip the display after completing a game without having to turn the board off and off.

Seems to have been added as a feature in today’s firmware update. After you completed a game with the black pieces hit new game and choose to play as white and the display will flip back to its normal orientation.
