Logical Chess: Move By Move: Every Move Explained by Irving Chernev
I too have Logical Chess book. Excellent.
This will sound strange but: SELECTED GAMES OF LAJOS PORTISCH. It was written by Egon Varnuz, not Portisch. I was still new to the game, when I picked up this book, looked at the diagrams and thought - THESE are the kind of positions I try to get but cannot. It made me a better positional player. A close second and complimentary in it’s effect to the Portisch book, is a small 79 page monograph the Chess Player (publishing) 49 years ago called COMBINATIONS IN THE MIDDLEGAME by Bondarevsky. Spotting the MOTIF (if one exists), the AIM (of the motif or what you might be able to achieve) and the MEANS to using what you have identified to gain or increase your advantage.
Wait…you’re supposed to read a chess book?? I thought they were for show on a bookshelf. But the one that seems to be helping logical chess move by move and also am enjoying Paul Keres The Road to the Top
As a new player, Levy’s book gave me what I needed to really have my first “grasp” on things, in a way nothing before that did. That was last year. I was able to move through content on Chess.com and Lichess with much more understanding and make slow, steady progress.
