This promotion indicator appears after the AI has chosen its move, when the move source and destination squares are displayed on the board. At this point, you can lift the pawn and either place the promoted piece on the destination square, or move the pawn to the destination square if you want to play using the pawn as a placeholder piece. Either will close the promotion indicator.
The built-in bot’s promotion not being shown has come up a couple times, but so far I haven’t been able to reproduce it. @Langers and @qvo - if you happen to run into this in a game that you can export from your phone and send to me, I’d love to play through it and try to reproduce this, but haven’t been able to so far.
Though, there is one situation that might act like this - do you think it’s possible you could be moving the pawn before looking at the screen? If so, moving the pawn to the destination square will promote it to play as the shown piece, close the popup, and switch back to the game screen for your turn. If that’s what’s happening, we can look into improving that experience. Below is an example playing the black onboard bot’s pawn b2→b1q:
Yes - in my case, I moved the pawn to the 8th rank, then looked at the screen to see what I should replace the pawn with. To me that is the intuitive way to proceed as I’m used to following the lights on the board before looking at the screen for feedback.
