While playing Board Editor, if a pawn is promoted to queen on-screen only, it will still be displayed as a pawn on-screen as long as the physical piece is not replaced, although it will still be playable as a queen. Not sure if it was the intended behavior, but I’d think it is more logical to have the virtual pawn replaced on-screen as a virtual queen.

In a future release, there will be a play screen after starting a game from the board editor - so the piece displays will be hidden.
