For chessup 2, an integrated AI of up to 2000 elo is announced. Also, a recognition of the game pieces is announced. Is this really in the works ? If so, will chessup 1 be able to go up to an integrated AI up to 2000 elo ?

Yes - the A.I. improvements will be rolled into ChessUp 1 as well. Expect that to roll out late summer
