Durability when storing chess pieces in a bag

Hey everyone, I am really enjoying the board. I have three cats at home, so leaving my board on the table is not really an option for me, as they really like to hide the pieces in the apartment.

The worst part about using the board is to put all the pieces back in the box and to get them out. I am thinking about putting the pieces in a bag.

Did anyone store them for a long time in bags? I am afraid that the pieces/color will be damaged if they are rubbing on each other.

That’s exactly the concern my friend, with whom I bought two boards, was having, he puts back the pieces in the box even if we ordered the bag and have the pouch to put pieces. I personally always store them in the pouch and am quite confident it’s not an issue. Jeff also mentioned the pieces were rock solid and could even drop so I’m not that much afraid. So far so good pieces are still very good and consistent. Bag is not moving that much so there is not so much rubbing on each other things.

I have been putting mine back in a bag - just throwing them in - they seem pretty durable but it has only been a short time so can’t definitively answer.

I’m lucky then! My cat doesn’t care too much about the pieces I leave in the coffee table :smile_cat:

Luckily for me I had an old rolltop desk that I can keep my chessboard in amd setup. Then I don’t have to worry about my cats or kids messing with it. Before I emptied out the desk, I had been putting the pieces back in the bag that came with the carry case every time. Like Jeff said, they are very durable, and so far that seems to be true.

I store my peices in a large pencil case, it has two compartments and it’s the perfect size. Doesnt fit in the box, but I dont keep my board in the box.

Just what I’ve been looking for! Thanks for the recommendation.

The only important thing is to keep the white and black pieces separate. That is why the bag comes with 2 bags for the pieces instead of 1.

Yes - the pieces are nearly invincible - except to each other. The black material and white material are best kept apart otherwise small opposite colored scratches can happen.

I’ve been keeping them in the pouch of the case, and extra pieces in the bags, and they have been fine. Been doing this since Christmas.

I do have all the promotion pieces together though. After reading this thread about colors rubbing off on each other, I think I should separate them though

@Jeff, is is possible to buy just the small white/black labeled ChessUp bags? I would love to have a second bag set for checkers. Right now all of the checkers are in one bag but would be nice to have them in 2 separate bags (due to the color rub-off issue you mentioned). I could always buy other felt-lined bags but it’d be cool to have all of them match and be the same as the ChessUp ones

I put all my checkers into a random headphone pouch together, sounds like I should separate them if I really care about a little rubbing…

Otherwise, I, too, use the official chessup bags and have the full set + promotion chess pieces all jumbled up together. The pieces feel really solid so I hadn’t thought about this, but they’re pretty snugly held in place in the pouch when stuffed into one of the pockets in the big case.

The checkers are safer because the edges are all smooth.

The chess pieces have sharper features.

We made ChessUp 2 pieces to have smoother edges, mainly for this reason. So they are likely ok stored together. My habit of keeping them apart stems from ChessUp 1 - which had sharp queen crowns

Good to know - I’ve been throwing them into the one bag
