lately I’ve been running into an issue more and more often where online games get aborted automatically before they really even start. I’m seeing two different scenarios:
Game starts but immediately aborts
A game is created and then aborts because the system claims it’s my turn. However, the board has not even shown the opponent’s first move yet, so I never actually had a chance to make a move.
Game aborts while I’m still in the queue
I’m searching for a game and the board still shows that I’m waiting in the queue. Without me leaving the queue or the game visibly starting, it suddenly aborts. I can tell this happens before the game really begins because right after the queue screen, I immediately get the “game aborted” message.
This has been happening quite frequently and makes it difficult to play online games reliably. Has anyone else experienced this issue, or is there a known fix or workaround?
Are you playing just using the board or with the app connected? If you have another browser or app instance, it can cause some issues depending on which Chess.com server you end up connecting to.
If there was a prior cancelled search or a log in on a different device it can sometimes cause issues for subsequent games. We are publishing fixes for this currently.
If you still have issues on fresh games - we will review all the logs for your games and find and fix any remaining issues.
Sorry for the trouble and thanks for reporting it.
I realize I’m bringing this one up from a couple of weeks ago, however this issue has become rampant for me. Currently about 75% of my games on Chess.com are never started; either aborted before I even see the game start (I’m guessing I’m White in those cases), or if I see that I’m Black and White never seems to make a move or have their clock start. This has happened across multiple time conditions (10+5, 5+5, 3+2, etc). I have no restrictions on my outbound or inbound ratings requirements, and my internet connection is 3 Gbps UP / 3 Gbps DOWN. I can play directly on the Chess.com app on my iPhone or iPad and I have zero issues of the sort.
This is frustrating, as I love the design and feel of the Chessup 2 board significantly more than my Chessnut EVO board (I’d sell my Chessnut EVO board if I could “trust” my Chessup 2 board to work as it should).
We will need to the team to review your account logs specifically.
And yes we will 100% support you and get this working for your account. What is your chess.com account name and/or board serial number? (Settings→About)
My Chess.com username is GR8-Ride, and my Chessup 2 board’s S/N is: 254220381.
Firmware is 4.3.5.
I’d love nothing more than to have these reliability issues resolved, as in actual gameplay, I greatly prefer my Chessup 2 board over the EVO (crappy pieces, have to implement an 800ms delay so that moves are recognized, which means no blitz on the EVO).
I also had an interesting one happen last night; I had originally attempted to play a 5+2 Blitz game, but it was not finding any opponents. After several minutes, I cancelled, and went to search for a 5+5 Blitz (Chess.com) game, and again, no opponents after several minutes. So I cancelled, and figured I’d try a 10+5 Rapid game. After a few minutes, it found me an opponent, but it was a 5+5 blitz game, and not a 10+5 Rapid game!
Curious - the discussion around reviewing logs raises the question in my mind if the ChessUp server(s) proxy the connections to the chess.com (and lichess) services or does the board communicate with the APIs directly?
FWIW I had a couple of games abort before starting yesterday. I played a game with no issues, then hit the button to start a new game, and it aborted. This happened three times. Then, I backed all the way out to the home screen on the board, went back into chess.com, and had no problems starting a game. I did this multiple games.
So for me, the issues seems to be related to starting a new game without exiting chess.com to the chessup homescreen.
