I’m experiencing some frustrating synchronization issues with my ChessUp 2.0 board, and it’s happening across both Android and iOS, though in slightly different ways.
For a long time, syncing with my Android device was instantaneous. However, recently, every time I try to refresh the game history in the app, the app crashes and closes.
On iOS, the experience is even worse. I can go through the manual synchronization process, and I even get a message confirming that the synchronization was successful. Despite this, the games simply don’t appear in the app.
This is incredibly frustrating. Analyzing my games is such a crucial part of my learning process, and not being able to do so easily and directly is a major drawback. It’s gotten to the point where I’m sometimes tempted to sell my board and look for an alternative, which is a shame because I genuinely love what ChessUp is doing.
Is anyone else experiencing similar issues, or does anyone have any potential solutions or workarounds? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I will get the app team to review this and they will look closer into your account. I think this is happening to a few users and we understand the value of having good game syncing and review.
I understand your pain, it’s also happening to a friend of mine who has a chessup account through the Facebook IDP if that could help debug the thing (maybe it’s the same for you?), maybe it’s unrelated but felt mentioning it since I don’t have the issue but not using Facebook for my chessup account
And thanks, Nicko, for the tip! My account is actually linked via Google login, so you might be onto something – perhaps it’s a broader issue with single sign-on.
I’m going to try creating a new, non-SSO account tonight and see if syncing works with that one. I’ll report back.
@Nicko@Rokacheck Are you both on the latest version of the Android app? There was an issue with bulk uploads of games from the board, but that has been addressed in 3.0.2
There shouldn’t be any issue with the account authentication type. If you find any difference in experience, it would be something stored in your account/games
Well, as I mentioned I don’t personally have issue with that (even if in the past I had), it’s a friend of mine for whom I bought the board in a dual pack during kickstarter campain. Now, it’s totally possible that he’s not on the latest version of the app, will ask him to update and keep you informed. It’s not all the time though, making even harder to debug
Android: We (family) played a lot of matches during the last month, but the last match history shown is from 13.04.25. Refreshing the page changes nothing. Also, everything is shown as a draw, but in reality draws are only 10% of matches
I go to settings and import the matches manually. I get a modal dialog telling me that everything is up-to-date. Then I go to the match history section, but the last match shown is from March (not even the April matches from Android)
We are going to shift to pushing games up to the cloud as they happen (versus blue tooth sync to the phone after).
The board saving routine is based on the very limited memory on ChessUp 1 (with no WiFi). And it is fragile with keeping sync with the app.
Very sorry games are not showing up. We will both look at the bug but also in a few months ChessUp 2 will start to push moves/games to the cloud and it will be a lot more robust and flexible.
If you can’t fix my issue before then, no worries at all – I can definitely wait for such a great solution like push.
It would be awesome if the push could be so good that we could even watch the matches live on mobile/tablet! (Maybe down the road, in bot matches, you could add a mode for learning where we can review live with hints? Just an idea for the future, no rush!).
While I’m sharing ideas, here are a couple more features I’d love:
Undo Move: Let us undo a move if we mess up during a game. But add a counter to show how many times we do it in that match. Why? Because getting quick feedback helps you learn super fast – you make a mistake, you try again right away. The counter is key so it doesn’t become a bad habit instead of a learning tool.
Easy Chess.com Analysis: In the match history, having a direct link to analyze the game on Chess.com would be amazing. Right now I copy/paste the PGN; a one-click link would save a few step (chess.com analyse tool is nested in menu) !
Thanks so much for all your hard work. My family and I truly love the product, and when the push function is added, we’ll love it even more!
And thanks for your quick feedback and help too, I really appreciate it.
