Bug Report – Game History Missing on ChessUp Android App (v3.0.9)

On October 14, I noticed that all my game history disappeared from the ChessUp app on my Android phone. The History screen now only shows the welcome message:

“Start Game
Welcome to ChessUp! Play your first game either with AI or invite your friends to join you.”

The Activity screen is also completely empty. I have played over 200 games on my ChessUp2 board, all of which used to appear correctly in my Android app.

After noticing the issue, I updated my Android ChessUp app from v3.0.8 (97) to v3.0.9 (101) to see if the update might fix it. Unfortunately, the problem persists.

When I played a new game after updating, the game briefly appeared in my History for about 2 seconds and then disappeared again.

Important:
My iPad ChessUp app (v3.0.9 (1)) still shows all of my game history correctly. I have not updated or changed anything on that device because the history is still intact there.

Device & App Details:

  • Android Device: ChessUp App v3.0.8 (97) → updated to v3.0.9 (101) → history missing

  • iPad Device: ChessUp App v3.0.9 (1) → history intact

  • ChessUp2 Board Firmware:

    • Main: 4.2.1

    • Touch: 0.1.1

      BB: 0.2.7

It looks like you imported some games from the board on the 14th? Do you know which app you used to import them?

Since you can view them on iOS, would you be able to export the PGNs and send them to me?

Hi, thanks for looking into this. Not sure of the exact steps, most likely…

First I opened my Android app and noticed all my games were gone.

Second, I played one quick game on the Chessup2 board and then opened my Android app again…saw the game appear and then immediately disappear.

Third, I opened my iPad app and my games we still there…so all is not lost. Whew.

Mostly, since my games are still on my iPad app I would just like my games to also start appearing on my Android app again, going forward. Not really concerned about getting all my games back on Android…just going forward …I need to be able to import and export from my Android app again (since I use it the most). Hope you can get it fixed. All app versions are listed on my original post. Thanks!

The games are stored in the cloud. Likely what happened is that you have undos or something not recognized as a legal move in Android. If you can send me the PGNs for those from iOS, I can take a look at them.

I’m not sure which games those would be? I tend to play AI games and undo a few moves. One time it did hang the board.. but I wouldn’t know which game that was. It happened more than a week ago.

Not really concerned about getting all the games back on my Android app…just going forward hope I can import/export them again. After playing one quick game and looking at my history, the game popped in and then disappeared. So I can’t seem to get any game history currently with the latest Android app.

That version of the game showing for a short amount of time was due to caching it locally to try to make fewer calls and limit data usage.

Update – October 17 2025: Ongoing “Missing Game History” Bug

Summary:
Further testing confirms the issue persists when using the Android ChessUp app and that the missing-game behavior affects both Android and iPad imports. Additional quirks were observed in how the iPad app updates its history.

New Findings:

  1. Android App – Still Losing Newly Imported Games

    • Played three new games last night using the ChessUp2 board.

    • Attempted to import these three games into the Android app.

    • All three games briefly appeared in History, then disappeared within about two seconds—same behavior as before.

  2. iPad App – No Import of Those Same Games

    • Tried importing those same three new games from the iPad ChessUp app (v3.0.9(1)).

    • No new games appeared; the last visible game remains #251.

  3. New Test Game – Direct iPad Import Works (With Quirk)

    • Played one new test game on the ChessUp2 board (no Android app involved).

    • Immediately imported via iPad app only.

    • Game #308 appeared successfully, but only after switching tabs:

      • Went to HistoryActivity → back to History before the new game appeared.
    • Suggests a UI refresh or caching issue even when imports succeed.

Outstanding Question:
Where are the missing games between #252 and #307?

  • These games were all played between the last visible iPad game (#251) and the newly imported test game (#308).

  • They do not appear in Android history (they vanish after import).

  • They do not appear in iPad history (they fail to import).

  • The ChessUp2 board seems to recognize new games, but older ones are inaccessible or skipped during sync.

Current Setup Recap:

  • Android App: v3.0.9 (101) → History empties after brief import.

  • iPad App: v3.0.9 (1) → History intact through #251, skips to #308 after successful new import.

  • ChessUp2 Firmware:

    • Main 4.2.1

    • Touch 0.1.1

    • BB 0.2.7

We are working on getting this fixed. As I mentioned in our chat conversation, this is a sizable change to be made and needs to be thoroughly tested. As far as importing the games twice, once one device has imported them, they do not stay on the board to be imported again. That range of games is saved in the cloud. There could be a sorting issue and if you scroll further down the list, you may find them. We are aware of this issue as well.

A new Android release (3.1.0) should be available in the store soon. It should resolve this issue.

Hi, I can confirm, the update from v3.0.9(101) to v3.1.1(103) on my Android phone fixes the problem with seeing no game history. Thank you, great job! The games now come in automatically when connected to the Chessup2 board.
The only little glitch I’m seeing, which doesn’t bother me as long as the games download, is the “Start Game…play your first game…” message above the list of games (which doesn’t make sense of course)…see screenshot. Not a big deal, just a UI minor hiccup.

That is due to not having any connected games being played. We can look at that area.
