I received my ChessUp 2 yesterday (I live in France). I had ordered the product directly from the official website. I’m very happy to have received it before Christmas.
For now, I’m absolutely thrilled with the device. The piece recognition works perfectly.
Here are just a few observations regarding the UI and the French translation, which is not yet fully optimized (but already greatly improved with version 1.1):
In Settings > Language: “Français” does not display correctly. The character “ç” is not properly rendered. Instead, I see a square.
Thank you for your responsiveness. The improvements made are very appreciable.
I went through the board menus again and made a list of display issues and missing translations. I also noted a few improvement suggestions.
I hope this will help you.
In Main Menu > Translate “Play bots” to “Jouer contre des bots” ou “Jouer contre des IA” (check the size). If space is limited, opt for: “Jouer vs Bots” or “Jouer vs IA”.
In “Play Bots” > Translate “AI Strength” to “Niveau de IA” or “Force IA”
In “Play Bots” > “AI Strength” > “Next” > Translate “Your assistance” to “Votre aide” or “Niveau d’aide” or “Aide”
In “Board Editor” > There is a display issue with the French translation. The back arrow overlaps the “É” in the title “Éditeur de plateau.” Perhaps simply use “Éditeur plateau.”
In Board Editor > Translate “Play” to “Jouer”
In ChessDotCom > Translate “Play” to “Jouer”
In ChessDotCom > Translate “Play a Friend” to “Jouer avec un ami” or “vs Ami” (if space limited)
In ChessDotCom > Translate “vs Computer” to “vs IA” or “vs Ordinateur” or “vs Bot”
In ChessDotCom > Play > Translate “Rated ?” to “Classé ?”
Suggestions :
In Play Bots > AI Strength : It might be more meaningful and motivating to express the AI’s level in ELO points (like on ChessDotcom).
In ChessDotCom > vs Computer (but it must be the same on others), it could be nice to display the current balance of power (+3, …) during the game based on the captured pieces.
Very important : In local play (against bots or a friend), there should be more game settings: Blitz, rapid mode (10 min, 15 | 10, …). Currently, there is no option to play with a timer in local games.
Here are additional elements to translate or change :
In Two Players > Next > Translate “Hint limit” to “Limite d’aides” or “Limite d’indices”
In Two Players > Next > Translate “None” to “Aucun” (in the time definition area, at the very bottom)
In a local two players game > Back arrow to display the confirmation window > Currently, the display shows 3 options: “Abandonner” (Abort the game), "Annuler (Cancel the game) and again “Annuler” (return to the game). It is difficult to understand the difference between the last two items since they have the same translation. The last element is used to return to the game. It must therefore be translated as “Retour” or “Retour au jeu”
In ChessDotCom > Translate “Play a Friend” to “Jouer avec un ami” or “Jouer vs Ami” or “vs Ami” (if space limited)
In ChessDotCom > vs Computer > Translate “Play vs…” to “Jouer contre …” or “Jouer vs…”
In ChessDotCom > vs Computer > Play vs… > [Choose a bot] in the list > Translate “Choose” to “Choisir”
Well, in english the confustion is the same, you got abort, cancel and cancel also difficult to understand the difference between the last two items, I’d say it’s not a translation issue but more global
I’d go with “Classique” as stated in this french Wikipedia article about World Chess Championship, and another one from ChessDotCom. The others are “Blitz” and “Rapide”.
Thank you for the translation improvements in today’s Version 2.6.0!
I have noted a couple of non-translations in French. I stay concerned with the length of words in French (usually longer than English) and I’d rather have everything stay in the same number of lines or less in French. So here are a couple of suggestions. In-between brackets are optional words that can be removed if space is limited.
Chess.com (menu #1)
5|5 sub-menu #1
“Balle” should be “Bullet”
Jouer vs Bots sub-menu #3
“Play vs…” should be “Jouer vs…”
“vs Ami” sub-menu #4 should be “Jouer vs Ami”
Deux joueurs (menu #2)
Assist level 2nd screen
“Intermédiaire” could be “Moyen” or reduce font, or fixed one-line, to have “Intermédiaire” stay in one line
Game mode 3rd screen
“Balle” should be “Bullet”
“Aucun - None” should be “Aucun - Aucun”
“Hint Limit” could be “Limite d’indices” if it can fit in one line
Paramètres (menu #7)
“Checkers Mode Calibration” item #7 should be “Calibration [du mode] Dames”
“Remove Pieces And Unplug USB” should be “Retirer [les] pièces et débrancher USB”
“Remove all pieces first. Your ChessUp will reboot.” should be “Retirer toute[s les] pièce[s]. [Votre] ChessUp redémarrera.”
“Calibrate” should be “Calibrer”
And finally, a link that explains the preference for “Bullet” rather than “Balle”:
