She is playing at the easiest bot level 1 - when she has a great move - like checkmate - it doesn’t show the green light - in fact - the lights on the board are not very helpful most of the time - for example - the red light and the green light are the lights I want her to watch for - and then - ask me questions as to why she thinks the move is great (if green) or bad (if red)
Are the lights not functioning well at the Level 1 bot level to show her great and poor moves (red and green)? We used to be able to select the bots in the ChessUp app on our phone controlling the level of play on the board with bots - and it seems like the green and red lights were much more accurate - than when we select Level 1 bots from the “Play bots” option directly off the chessboard now - I guess I’m surprised and a little disappointed that the lights don’t seem to work well at this bot level - especially the green light!
The light feedback depends on the Assistance level (color feedback) you select on the ChessUp 2 board — not just the bot difficulty.
Here’s how the color logic actually works on the board right now:
• Blue= the move is neutral or average (neither clearly good nor bad)
• Red = a blunder or weak move
• Green = a strong or best move
And here’s what each Assistance level shows based on testing directly on the board:
None: all moves stay (no evaluation feedback)
Beginner: shows for clear blunders and for most playable moves — very forgiving
Novice: adds more variation — still mostly and , but more selective about best moves
Intermediate: full feedback range — for bad moves, for average, for good/best
Advanced: tighter evaluation — only truly strong moves get
Master: strictest — almost everything else is or , and only for the engine’s top choice
So if your wife wants to see clear red vs. green feedback (like older versions), I’d suggest Intermediate or Advanced — those levels restore the full red/green range instead of keeping everything greenish like Beginner mode.
Hope that clears it up! It’s not a bug — just the board using simpler color logic at the easy levels.
Following up on the suggestion by Ivara96 and setting the “Assistance Level” at “Intermediate” or “Advanced” - the lights are working perfectly (green and red) - as those assistance levels restore the full red/green range - and finding great moves (like checkmate in 1) and finding blunder moves that are really blunders - works perfectly
So to recap, I have my wife play against the easiest bot (selected on the board - not connected at all to chess.com) - and then I set the Assistance Level at “Intermediate” or “Advanced” - and my wife was absolutely thrilled to “win” 4 games in 90 minutes - and I “stop” her play to ask her “why” a dark green light is a great move or “why” a dark red light is a blunder - and between the accurate lights - and my questions - she’s not only “winning” games (making her happy) - but also “understanding” better “why” certain moves are either great - or are blunders
I can certainly send you a picture of a position where she is playing the easiest bot and has the Assistance Level set at “Beginner” and a “Green light” does not show up for an obvious mate in 1 - but I’m happy knowing if the Assistance Level is set at “Intermediate” or “Advanced” - the lights function perfectly for the easiest bot - and my wife absolutely is IN LOVE with ChessUp 2!
