Game frozen, lost on time

Hello, I think this is not the first time this has happened. Some time ago, my son had a similar bug, and the game ended in a loss. The situation is that at some point the game froze while it was the opponent’s turn. The clock was running, but on the board only a couple of squares were highlighted, and moving pieces did nothing. Time ran out, and the clock still showed 00:00 for the opponent. When the board was turned off, my son’s account showed that he had lost the game on time.

Today, the same thing happened, but we decided to wait and see what would happen if it showed that the opponent had no time left (on the chess.com website, the game wasn’t visible, so it couldn’t be continued there). Eventually, the opponent’s time on the board changed from zero to 10 minutes, and a notification appeared saying that the opponent had won on time.

Here is the game; my son played Black: pathakakhil vs. knightbouncer | Analysis - Chess.com

p.s. I wish there was an option to continue a game on website

Thank you for this detailed report, I’m sorry we dropped this move and your son’s game, we’re looking into this now.

today the same problem.

ps. we found that if you press on Play online on chess.com then the current game from chess up will show up and we can finish it there

Hi @Nyole - the problem here is a misrecognized position caused by a faulty white king.

The purple lights under the pieces are indicating the board does not think the pieces are in the position they need to be in.

The board failed to recognize the preceding white king move - and is stuck waiting for that move to finish. Meanwhile black promoted the pawn to a queen, but the board is still waiting on the king move.

We will have customer service send out a replacement white king. Sorry for the issue.

If the board does highlight the squares under the pieces, it is a sign the state of the game is confused. Which should never happen when playing legal moves - except with a faulty piece (the white king). Sorry again for the bad piece.

(*or the sequence of the white king capturing the black queen was mis-recognized - but same root cause)

thank you very much! it was really quick!
