Just wanted to throw out an idea in case there’s ever a ChessUp 3 in the works:
How cool would it be if the opponent’s pieces could move automatically on the board?
There’s already a chessboard manufacturer that has implemented this kind of feature, but without proper online multiplayer support—something where ChessUp currently has a strong lead. Combining both would be a total game-changer.
Imagine playing an online match and watching your opponent’s moves unfold on the board without lifting a finger. That would take the immersive experience to a whole new level and really push ChessUp ahead in terms of innovation.
Would love to see something like this down the road!
Plenty of people want the Chessnut Move. And there are plenty of reasons to avoid the device, the main one for me is having to charge the pieces separately from the board. It’s a lot of extra stuff. Plus there is the problem of the pieces needing to be replaced every couple of years (if the pieces are robotic).
Also the appeal of such a board is being able to automatically set up puzzles. But so far Chessup has not shown any success in implementing puzzles on the standard board.
Chessup 1 still does not have proper checkers.
Chessup 2 is still a work in progress.
Hopefully they finish one of these projects before moving on to the next. The fact that self moving pieces have been on the radar of so many failed attempts suggests it’s more difficult than people think.
I don’t think I realized the pieces propelled themselves. I thought it was magnets in the board.
Even so, you would think they would have a storage case that charges them all at once or maybe some sort of wireless charging built into the board. Glad I didn’t buy that back before I got Chessup 2.
No, you charge all the pieces together, separately from the board, via a charging pad.
Yeah each piece is a robot. Hopefully the gears do not get easily mucked up by lint and hair. And the batteries for the pieces will probably last 2 years or so with heavy use.
I have two Chessnut boards and they are great, but the Chessnut Move is nothing I would consider buying. The pieces are ugly as hell and the mechanics does not seem to be very reliable. I think that is the totally wrong way to go, when it comes to self moving pieces. Self moving pieces to me look more like a gimmick, which is exciting short term, but after a while it will get boring or just will not work any more. Then you have an expensive pieve of garbage.
For me the Chessup 2 is the best electronic chess board on the market at the moment. The chessnut board I have are also pretty good, but they depent on a mobile device, which the Chessup does not.
If properly implemented it would be excellent not for the gimmicky play, but for set up of positions. Imagine being able to scan an image and have the board set up the position for you and then let you play from there. Would be a huge time saver as well as prevent positional errors made by manual setup.
If properly implemented then maybe, but I did not see any of that so long. None of the boards I have seen so far looks reliable and nice to me.
Besides that, if you are in a hurry, better find another game to play.
Well, I don’t really see any time savings there.
In the time it takes me to scan the image and the board adjusts the position, I could just as easily set up the pieces myself.
Yes, but 1st it is more than 6 times the price, I guess and 2nd it is the board and an extra device.
What I like about the Chessup 2 is, that I can take it with me. I take it to our local club meetings and use it to analyse our latest games. That works pretty well and with the carry bag, it is easy to carry around.
There may be some work to be done, but as soon as the internal BOTs are getting stronger without beeing connected to the WIFi, it is a really great board.
I always wanted a chess computer with piece recognition without having the need to push a piece down, when you move it and without having to use a smartphone connected to the board. The Chessup 2 is exactly what I was looking for.
I only use the Chessnut Air any more, when I want to play with Lucas Chess, which is a great software on PC and the Chessnut Go, because it’s small form factor when I want to take it with me and don’t want to carry the bigger bag of the Chessup 2, but that cases are so rare, that I even consider selling them both.
I cant go from 16 piece to 3 piece to 13 pieces and set those up faster than the board can do it. And maybe it doesn’t need to be scanned. Maybe you just use a lichess study like 100 engamea, tap the screen and boom, your pieces are setting up.
In 2018, before ChessUp I backed a chess board called ‘Square Off - grand kingdom set’. A chess board where the pieces moved on the board itself. Very nice chess board and it is like Harry Potter Chess. I can follow live matches off tournaments (the 2 sides play itself) , play against the internal bots and you can play online on chess.com and Lichess. All went well and is very nice looking. Then the company got overtaken, subscriptions for all stuff, etc. Things got very frustrated to do because you needed to pay. Even before all that if you play online you loose the time that the board makes the opponents move so short timecontrols are not done. It is really slow compared to what we do on the ChessUp 1 and 2 by hand. The only good thing nowedays is that the pieces move on their own.
I really prefer the ChessUp 2 so I can play without any other device.
