Feedback regarding Lichess stability and feature requests

Hi ChessUp Team,

I’m reaching out to share some genuine feedback regarding my recent experience. I really like the board—so much so that I’ve convinced friends to buy the product and have even defended it online—so I’m sending this because I truly want to see it succeed.

However, the board is still proving to be unreliable during play. Just yesterday:

Game 1: The board crashed, forcing me to finish on the Lichess app.

Games 2 & 3: I encountered a “Claim Victory” banner during time scrambles, which disrupted the game. Gladly, at least I was able to finish the games.

Currently, if I want a guaranteed smooth experience, I find myself having to connect via the Chessconnect extension. It’s frustrating that, after all this time, the native integration still feels hit-or-miss. This is not an isolated incident, I’ve been experiencing issues since a long time, but didn’t have the time to put this into words in a post here.

I also wanted to ask: Are we going to be able to send or receive challenges from people we are not friends with? This is a must for me, as I occasionally play in the Lichess Lonewolf League.

I’m starting to ask myself if the board is ever going to deliver a truly smooth online experience or these essential niche features. I hope you receive this as constructive feedback from a loyal user who wants to see the product live up to its potential.

Best regards,

Ricardo

We will take a look at the reported game crash.

Thanks. I think you should also take another look at the claim victory issue. The screenshot on its own might look fine, but it doesn’t really show what was actually happening. Here you have some extra details, that I should have included in my previous post.

I was seeing this while my opponent was still actively making moves. On top of that, I was shown the icons that usually appear when this timer hits zero. I even clicked the trophy icon (to claim a victory) at some point because I assumed my opponent had left the game, but that wasn’t the case, and the game just continued.

So, something feels off here. The behavior doesn’t match what I’d expect, especially if this is meant to work like it does on Lichess. It would be good to revisit the logic, because right now it doesn’t work correctly (I think I have reported this issue already in the past, 1 year ago).

Yes we are looking into that too. That one might be an issue with their board API, but we are looking into it.

Game #2 and #3 appears to be an issue with the Lichess API sometimes not telling the board the opponent has returned. Discussing with Lichess staff this week. Thank you for your patience with these. Still working on #1.

When I was playing 4545 via Chessup I used to friend/follow my opponent just for the game. But since my house move I haven’t been playing on Lichess via Chessup yet to compare my Lichess experience with yours.

Can you send a challenge only by following your opponent?

what about receiving a challenge? That is just out of the question at the time being.

If you follow anyone you can challenge them inside the lichess menu off the board. I use that way to play maia bots.

After the games just unfollow.

Server patch is ready for #2 and #3, should be fixed with the next Lichess server reboot.
