lately I’ve been noticing something quite frustrating: the matchmaking on Chess.com has become extremely slow for me when I’m trying to play 15|10 rapid games. Sometimes it takes up to 5 minutes to find an opponent! Even if I cancel the search after about a minute and try again, I still end up waiting several minutes.
I have an Elo of around 620, and I’m wondering—is anyone else experiencing this? Could it be a problem with my rating range or time control preference? Or maybe just a temporary issue on Chess.com’s end?
Would love to hear if others have had the same problem and if there are any workarounds.
Thanks!
Edit: I don’t know it this is a chess.com or chess.com x ChessUp API issue
I just went into the app and tried to find a game there — no delay at all, only took a few seconds. I’m aware there have been issues recently with matchmaking via the board, but I assumed that only applied to bots.
However, since today the issue has become much more noticeable for me too. It now takes at least 5 minutes before I get matched with anyone. And a while ago, after waiting 5 minutes, I finally got matched with a player who had twice my Elo.
It does the same for me until I see my challenges pop up. after that it works very fast. btw I play 15I10 too. so try that. It keeps popping up with a very old challenge too. but it pairs me in seconds after that. by the way, why does it pop up with a 3 sec plus 2 challenge every time.
The chessup board is again troubling for the last couple of days. It keeps on searching for games for several minutes and never finds one.
When I login through my pc in the same wifi network and in the same room it gets the game in a minute.
We tried all the workarounds - resetting the board, reconnecting the wifi, connecting thru the phone. And yes, it’s not on a mesh network and on the latest version. It was working fine a few days ago, and problem cropped up just a few days ago. Now it can’t find any game.
Playing 15/10 control games.
Please look into this and let us know what we need to provide further - screenshots, etc.
I’ve found a temporary workaround that might help, although it’s far from ideal.
If you switch the board’s connection mode to chess.com, you can start a match from your mobile phone—for example, a 15|10 game—and the board will automatically sync with the phone. This way, you can still play the game entirely on the board without needing to look at your phone during the match.
However, there are some downsides:
You won’t see the time on the board,
You also can’t track the material balance (i.e., whether you’re ahead or behind in pieces).
You essentially play blind to the clock and material count, so it’s definitely not a satisfying solution—but at least it allows you to keep playing on the board itself.
I am seriously not looking at workarounds now and is very frustrating when it defeats the whole purpose of otb games. This needs a permanent fix at Chessup 2 end.
Looking to hear from Jeff for an update from product team.
